I’ve been using powders which contains talc and for a long time my skin sensitive doesn’t really agree to it. My skin would feel tight after a few hours of applying the setting powder. For a long time I have always thought that this is how setting powder should feel. I have been using Make Up For Ever’s “Ultra HD” microfinishing loose translucent powder for a long time. It did a great job at making my pores appear smaller, but it also made my skin look and feel really matte, and hence creating the feeling of “tightness”.
I just always thought that was what setting powder did and accepted it. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon an Instagram post by a celebrity makeup artist, Nam Vo who’s known for her “dewy dumpling glow” that got me intrigued with “glow” finish makeup. Not just highlighters and contouring but actual skin glow, instead of your normal “matte/masky” effect.
I read that she swears upon the Hourglass range to get her beautiful glow. That makes sense, healthy skin should be glow skin. Plus when your makeup sets matte, it tends to look heavy and unnatural, which is rather unsettling. So off I went to the closest Space NK to test out their translucent powder. It exceeded every expectation I had for a setting powder. I let the store assistant “powder-me-up” and walked around all day without any touch up. I got home later that evening and to my surprise my skin still looks every bit so flawless. Pores were non-visible, skin was glowing and my complexion was more even.
I was sold, and went I bought possibly the most luxurious translucent powder I have ever had. Don’t get me wrong I do love a bit of luxury, but I just never thought that makeup was really worth much investment, that was until I discovered Hourglass. There’s no turning back now. This is definitely going into my Holy Grail list!
Here’s my review on Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder:
💦Packaging: 3/5 – It does have a very luxurious feel to it. It’s gold and has a beautiful H shaped sifter. However, I think Makeup For Ever/ Glossier’s trampoline net works much better. I had the unfortunate incident of dropping the product (with its cover). When I opened the cover and a heck load of powder has been dispensed out of the “H” sifter. I couldn’t quite figure out how to “undo” it.
I tried tapping the container, hoping that it will “drain” the powder back but to no avail. I just wish I didn’t remove that plastic sticker that it came with so at least I could tape it back. That would be handy especially when I intend to travel with the product. I think something should be done about the packaging.
💦Texture/ Ingredients: 5/5 – I love that the product is talc and parabens-free. Definite no-no when it comes to any beauty product. No one needs another cancer-causing (carcinogenic) ingredient in their products. Because it is without talc, the product doesn’t create the ashy feeling, or draw out moisture from your skin. I also love that the powder is extremely fine! Plus it is infused with diamond micro-particles (diamond powder). Which makes me feel expensive every time I wear it!
💦Efficacy: 5/5 – I absolutely love this product! It helps blurs the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles for an airbrushed finish. Because it is so fine, the diamond powder also helps create a glow but without any flashbacks. I also feel that it “sets” (I still think this is not the best description as it doesn’t make me feel like I’m wearing a mask) makeup for longer. Plus, my skin actually feels more flexible and hydrated throughout the day.
A trick that I learnt from Nam Vo is to pile on facial oil prior to my primer. This not only helps hydrate my skin but also create that beautiful dewy glow, making my skin look healthy and glowy all day! She is also known for doing SongofStyle’s Aimee Song’s makeup!
💦Price: 4/5 – I’ve to say at £36 for 10.5g it is an expensive product. However, a little does go a long way. I can see this lasting me well over 6 months considering that I do not usually wear makeup everyday.
💦Mode d’emploi: I use it as the last step in my makeup routine. Apply powder all over face to set makeup.
💦Repurchase: Heck yeah! This is definitely a makeup Holy Grail. Only if it was a little cheaper but I’ve to say I’m addicted to this product! #MakeupCrack
💦Overall Rating: 4/ 5 ⭐ It should actually get a 5 out of 5 if it wasn’t for the packaging and price point. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful setting powder I have ever experienced in the market!
