As a child, I struggled with skin issues. Despite having spent exorbitant amounts of money on dermatologist visits and skin care products, my circumstances remain unchanged. With limited options available, I was stuck with prescribed steroid creams to treat my severe eczema throughout my childhood. This came with a price as the effects of steroid creams have scared me.

I was told by my dermatologist that I would eventually grow out of it, in which I did. Until one day in my late 20s, I woke up with the dreaded facial eczema. It came back with a vengeance, angrier than it was and it took a toll on my self-esteem. I think people with sensitive skin can comprehend when I say this, there are days that I do not feel like leaving home when my skin starts acting up. People often talk about bad hair day but no one really talks about a bad skin day. I started paying more attention on product labels and ingredients, in hopes that I may find the cause to my sensitised skin.

While working on a global skin care brand as a strategic planner, I started noticing the ingredients that were being used, listed on product labels. Product labelling can be so deceptive, often disguising dangerous chemicals with hard to pronounce scientific names. As I dug deeper, I discovered that some of these key ingredients were highly carcinogenic and are detrimental to health, which left me completely flabbergasted.

I then took it upon myself to head back to school. I underwent an extensive training in a renowned London college in which I obtained my diploma as an aesthetician. It was no surprise when I discovered that genetic predisposition is not all to blame for skin sensitivity as environmental factors (i.e.: chemicals in our skin care products as such) is also a major culprit.

My training has not only equipped me with a vast amount of knowledge but also a profound understanding in skin aesthetics. Therefore, I am here today to share with you some of the inside scoops of skin care products – the good, the bad and the ugly of beauty.
